Ian Shipway

Managing Director

Ian is the founder and Managing Director of HC Wealth Management and has been a prominent figure in the UK financial planning sector for well over twenty years. He continues to look after the affairs of a number of clients and specialises in financial planning and investment strategy. The services he provides include strategic financial planning and management of assets within the context of the financial plan.

After completing a degree in Mathematics and Oceanography in 1977, Ian joined the Royal Navy, specialising as a Hydrographic Surveyor. For the next seven years, he spent much of his time surveying in various parts of the world and on leaving the Navy, he spent three years in the offshore oil industry before joining the sales force of a small UK Life company.

In 1990, he formed his own independent advisory business and built it to become one of the leading financial planning businesses in the UK before the firm was acquired by Thinc Group (now Bluefin) in 2003. During this period, he was actively involved in the development of the financial planning profession in the UK as a board member and then President of the Institute of Financial Planning. He also represented the UK on the International CFPCM Council for three years and has lectured on Financial Planning in Japan, Australia and the USA.

Following the acquisition of his business, Ian was initially responsible for designing and overseeing the investment strategies employed within the financial planning business unit and he chaired the Bluefin Investment committee. He was later promoted to Managing Director of Bluefin Wealth Management, responsible for the strategy and running of what was then one of the largest financial planning firms in the UK. During this period, he oversaw the acquisition and integration of a number of high profile planning businesses and the development of individuals transitioning from a transactional to a consultative based client relationship.

At the end of 2009, Ian left Bluefin and established HC Wealth Management in order to provide a more bespoke service to higher net worth clients. In recent years, HCWM has been built by bringing together a team of highly competent client facing and support staff capable of providing a first class ongoing service.

Since 2009, Ian has also worked with Succession Advisory Services and is currently Chair of the Investment Committee. This involves overseeing a number of core investment solutions that are made available to member firms, helping them embed global best practice in financial planning. He also manages Succession’s Turnkey Asset Management Programme relationship with Dimensional Fund Advisors.

Jane Cook

Certified Financial Planner

Jane joined HC Wealth Management in 2010 as a Certified Financial PlannerCM professional and brought with her over twenty-five years’ experience in the industry. Jane was one of the original advisers with the newly formed NatWest Life in 1992, later coming to specialise in investments, pensions, tax and trusts, with a preference for working with clients with personal needs rather than business clients. Jane obtained the Advanced Financial Planning Certificate in 2001 and the CFPCM certification in 2008.

She moved to Fiona Price and Partners in 2003, a holistic, fee based, female-only adviser company specialising in looking after female clients. Due to various takeovers and mergers, the company became part of the Thinc group and Jane transferred to the Wealth Management part of the company with more focus on lifetime cashflows, while still working with many of the same clients.

Jane has always chosen to work three days a week, originally enabling her to spend quality time with her three children and now they are all grown up, she has the time on her non-work days to indulge herself with skiing, walking the family dog up on her local North Downs, cinema, music concerts and long lunches with friends and family.

Martin Waller

Chartered Financial Planner

Martin is a Chartered Financial Planner and a Certified Financial PlannerCM professional and joined HC Wealth Management in 2010.

He entered financial services in 1981 and has been a Financial Planner since 1986. In 1990, he joined the Institute of Financial Planning and began using cash flow modelling with all clients from that time. Many of his clients have been with him for over twenty years.

While the majority of Martin’s work now involves planning at, or around, the point of retirement, he applies his skills to a wide range of financial situations: estate planning, business succession, higher rate tax planning, divorce, bereavement and, of course, planning for the good things in life, such as a holiday home purchase.

His approach to any situation remains rooted in the fundamental principles of financial planning – a thorough understanding of objectives and attitudes, and a plan of action designed to achieve those objectives in the most efficient way possible. Martin believes that the review process is key to the long term success of any financial plan.

Louise Norman

Certified Financial Planner & Director

Louise is a Certified Financial PlannerCM professional and Director of HC Wealth Management. She looks after a number of clients, with a particular focus on Lifetime Cashflow Planning and Investment Management. In her role as Director, Louise is also responsible for the day to day running of the business and overseeing the support team.

She started her career in financial services in January 2001, having attained an LLB Hons Law degree at Nottingham Trent University. After graduation, Louise joined Ian Shipway as a Paraplanner in the company he owned at that time. Louise worked closely with Ian to provide clients with strategic financial planning and management of assets within the context of the financial plan and gained many years’ experience in this area.

During her time with Thinc, which later became Bluefin, Louise’s remit expanded considerably, resulting in her role as Head of Professional Services at Bluefin Wealth Management, where she had responsibility for an award-winning team of around thirty Paraplanners based in eight offices in England and Wales. Louise left Bluefin in August 2010 to concentrate on a more client focused role.

Whilst at HC Wealth Management, Louise has helped to bring together the team of Planners and support staff and ensure that everyone within the business delivers a high quality client service in Lifetime Cashflow Modelling, Financial Planning and Investment Advice.

Although now a Financial Planner, Louise received the designation of Accredited Paraplanner from the Institute of Financial Planning in 2011, in recognition of the work she has done and support she has given to the Paraplanning Profession.

Outside work, Louise enjoys going to the gym, reading and spending time with her young family and taking part in all the activities that this involves.

David Gaskell

Financial Planner

David joined HC Wealth Management in August 2013 as a Financial Planner.

He has over 25 years’ experience in financial services, beginning when he joined Standard Life in Reading in 1986, where he ran the Quotation Department, before moving to manage the Pension Department with a staff of 17.

David later moved to Charles Lucas & Marshall Solicitors to run the Pensions Department in their Financial Services Division. His technical knowledge was greatly valued and when they became part of The Radnor Group, he became a Director of Radnor Employee Benefits Ltd, which ran the company’s Pensions Department. The Group subsequently joined the Destini Group in 2004, where David first met Ian Shipway. In 2008, David moved within the business to join Ian in the Wealth Management Division of Bluefin, where Ian was Managing Director.

His clients have principally been other professionals, Directors and senior employees, many of whom David has worked with in the period before and after their retirement.

Jon Pinfold

Chartered Financial Planner

Jon has worked in financial services for over 25 years and is a Chartered and Certified Financial PlannerCM.

Having started his advising career in the City, Jon moved to the independent arm of Lloyds Bank, working primarily with Lloyds Private Banking and Lloyds Bank Commercial Service. He has a wide knowledge base with extensive experience of advising both high net worth individuals and SMEs.

After Lloyds, Jon moved to Fraser Smith and specialised in giving advice to clients of other professional firms including leading local solicitors and accountants. In 1998, in conjunction with one of those professional connections, Taylor Walton LLP, he formed and was Managing Director of Hart House Financial Planning. This successful company was then sold to Thinc in 2004, which subsequently became Bluefin before being acquired by Towry in 2013. Jon left Towry a year later and now enjoys working with ex-colleagues from his Thinc and Bluefin days at HC Wealth Management.

Jon has been advising the majority of his clients for over 10 years and believes that advice is about an ongoing close relationship. His experiences have also taught him that ‘big is not beautiful’ as a large corporate culture often gets in the way of providing sound, flexible, efficient and cost effective financial planning on a personal basis that is client focused.

Outside of work, Jon is married with two grown up children. The family love Bertie, their faithful spaniel. Jon enjoys playing golf and trying to maintain a single figure handicap as well as tending the garden. Unfortunately, he finds these activities tend to be mutually exclusive!
